If you have over £23,250 in capital (amount correct at Jan 2018), you are unlikely to be eligible for any funding assistance from Adult Services if you need residential care, and may be expected to meet the full cost of the care yourself. However, you can still receive advice from Adult Services about which care home may best suit your current needs. If your needs can be met in your own home, you would be expected to make a contribution towards the cost of your care up to a maximum weekly amount, depending on your financial circumstances.
Even if you have more than £23,250 in capital, you can and shouold ask for an assessment of your needs, and help to arrange your care if you need this.
There are some types of capital that are not included as assessable capital when working out if someone is eligible for funding assistance, such as money you have received from compensation for a Personal Injury. If you are not sure how your capital will be treated, you can ask for a financial assessment once it is confirmed that you meet Adult Services eligibility criteria for care in a residential care home or care at your home.
